As I have researched, I have learned a few things that I did not know before. Firstly, the first person to be punished for playing capoeira was a female. I had been told when I was first training that it was a male only sport until around Mestre Bimba's time.
Another thing that has been reinforced to me is that capoeira's history will always remain a mystery. I have spent a good amount of time doing research and as soon as I have a good feel for where this jogo do Brasil came from, something happens and I find that I know less now then I thought I knew when I started.
I think this is true of capoeira in practice as well. So on Friday, we will be going over the basics in depth. Plan on a lot of the same over and over. Also be ready to explain to me (Papai Noel) or to other people in the class why you do things the way you do them.
